I had the pleasure of seeing Julian Priester’s last hurrah as an instructor at Cornish for all his years of service since 1979. He was leading the free inprovisation ensemble for Scores of Sound in Poncho. The ensemble started off strong, with Joe Eck on the drums playing freely, as each other member walked out periodically and one by one, each adding another layer of texture to the overall sound. The entrances were a bit awkward, so I found the best way to enjoy this segment of the performance by closing my eyes so I didn’t have to see each one of the members trip over cords and fumble with their instruments before adding their contribution to the mix. When they all played however, it was impressivly cohesive. The transitions between sections was seamless, especially in the first song. By the end, the form snuck up on me and collected momentum like a freight train.
